Becoming a Notary
New to notary work? Here's what you need to know to get started in your state.
Meet State Requirements
Each state has its own age, residency, and background check requirements. Most states require you to be 18+, a legal resident, and have no felony convictions.
Complete Your Application
Submit your notary application to your state's commissioning authority — typically the Secretary of State. Fees vary by state.
Get Your Bond & Supplies
Most states require a surety bond. You'll also need an official notary seal/stamp and a notary journal to record your acts.
Become a Signing Agent
To handle loan signings, complete an NNA-certified signing agent course and background check. This opens the door to higher-paying real estate closings.
